What's Actually in Focus Powder: The Whole Label, Line by Line

Most focus supplements are sold on a feeling. You read the front of the tub, you see a word like clarity, and then you turn it over and find a single line that says Proprietary Focus Blend, 4,200 mg. That number tells you the total weight of a group of ingredients. It does not tell you how much of any one of them you are drinking, which means it does not tell you anything you can act on.

Focus Powder does not have one. Every active is named on the label, in descending order of weight. This post is that list, with a short note on each.

The actives, heaviest first

L-Arginine HCl

An amino acid the body uses as a precursor to nitric oxide. It is one of the most widely studied amino acids in sports nutrition, which is why it appears in a great many pre-workout and pre-study formulas.

Inositol

A sugar alcohol found naturally in citrus fruit and whole grains. It is involved in cell signalling, and it also happens to carry a mild sweetness, which is part of why the sour flavors land the way they do without a heavy sweetener load.

Alpha-GPC

Short for L-alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine. It is a choline source, and choline is a nutrient the body needs; it contributes to normal lipid metabolism and to normal homocysteine metabolism. Alpha-GPC is the form you see in nootropic formulas rather than plain choline bitartrate, and it is usually the ingredient people are looking for when they compare labels.

Natural Caffeine (from green tea)

Caffeine, extracted from green tea rather than synthesised. Chemically the molecule is the same either way; the difference is the source. The amount per serving is printed on the tub, which matters, because caffeine is the one ingredient here where the dose is the whole story. More on that in a moment.

L-Theanine

An amino acid found in tea leaves, and the reason tea and coffee feel different at the same caffeine dose. Caffeine and L-theanine are almost always used together in this category, and that pairing is deliberate in Focus Powder rather than incidental.

Asian Ginseng Extract

Panax ginseng, one of the oldest botanicals in continuous use. It is standardised as an extract here rather than included as raw root powder, so the amount is meaningful rather than decorative.

Black Pepper Extract

Piperine. It appears in small amounts in a lot of formulas because of its role in absorption. It is not there for flavor — the quantity is far too small to taste.

The B-complex

B1 (thiamin), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B6, folate, B12 and pantothenic acid. These are vitamins involved in normal energy-yielding metabolism, and they are the least glamorous part of the label and one of the most sensible.

What one tub actually is

150 g of powder. A serving is two scoops, 7.5 g, in 16 fl oz of cold water — so 20 servings: 20 days of daily use, or about four weeks if you take it on weekdays only. Take no more than one serving (2 scoops, 200 mg of caffeine) in any 24-hour period.

Why the flavors are all the same formula

Sour Grape, Sour Gummi Worm and Sour Candy contain the identical actives at the identical doses. The only variable is the flavor system. That is worth saying plainly, because plenty of brands quietly change a formula between flavors, and it means you can pick on taste alone.

How to read any label, not just this one

Three habits will tell you most of what you need to know about a focus supplement in under a minute:

  1. Look for a proprietary blend. If you find one, you cannot compare the product to anything, including a cheaper version of itself.
  2. Find the caffeine number. If it is not printed, that is a decision someone made on purpose.
  3. Check the serving count against the net weight. A tub that looks cheap per unit is sometimes just a tub with fewer servings in it.
